Synopsis

Becoming Resilient is a self-directed guide which the reader can follow to learn to develop their own emotional resilience.

It begins with my journey through the emotional exhaustion of full-time caring for a chronically ill daughter and my own personal injury and trauma to discovering the skills which build resilience, and slowly developing the techniques and narrative which rebuilt my wellbeing. Having found this path to resilience, my next goal was to share it with my clients and as many others as I could reach, through the development of a training program, and now a self-help book.

Most of us think that we are at the mercy of our past experiences. The Becoming Resilient process teaches that we can control the thoughts that our past experiences have imposed on us, and our anxieties about the future. Using everyday language concepts such as resilience, neuroplasticity and being in the present are explained. “Homework“ of regular practice of skills such as mindfulness, gratitude, acceptance and letting go, and techniques to manage emotions allow the reader to develop the skills which build resilience. The process is to develop a state of calm followed by increased strength, confidence and control over the thoughts which direct our lives. In times of rapid change, like the current Covid-19 pandemic presents us with, developing the ability to bounce back from difficulties is key to maintaining positive mental health.

The book presents examples from those who have put the process into practice and become resilient, to show that such personal development is indeed possible to achieve, and that each individual can achieve the resilience to cope in a world of rapid change and constant stress, and even to bounce forward to new challenges without fear.
